Potassium iodide is an ionic compound in which iodide ions can form dark yellow precipitated silver iodide with silver ions (see photodecomposition, which can be used to make the high-speed photographic film), As a component of thyroxine, iodine is closely related to the basal metabolism of livestock and poultry. It participates in almost all of the material metabolism processes. The lack of iodine in livestock can cause hyperplasia of the thyroid gland, decrease the basal metabolic rate, and affect growth and development. The feed for young animals and livestock and poultry in iodine-deficient areas needs to be iodized.
