Description

Rhodymeniapalmata, a red seaweed found on both sides of the North Atlantic Ocean. It's shaped like a palm and made of thin rubber. Branches vary in number and size (12 to 40 cm (5 to 16 inches). To attach to rocks, mollusks, or larger algae with suckers or pseudoroots. Fishermen in the area dry it and eat it raw. You can taste it after chewing for a long time. It can also be eaten with fish and butter.

Function

• Algal body is bright red and rich in protein (15%-28% of algal dry weight), vitamins, unsaturated fatty acids and other nutrients. It is popular in the UK as a Marine food, and is well known in the United States, Canada and France as a live seaweed feed for aquatic animals abalone and sea urchin [1]. Researchers from China, Japan and the United States have studied in detail its effectiveness as a feed for abalone and found that of all the subtidal algae tested, R. palmatum was the best for promoting gonad development and young abalone growth in abalone and sea urchins.
