Devil's Claw is a root from a native southern Africa plant, its name comes from the small hooks on the plant's fruit. The active ingredients in devil's claw are believed to be iridoid glycosides called harpagosides, which are found in the secondary root. Devil's Claw has been used in Africa for thousands of years as a traditional remedy for Arthritis and fever. In many tests, it has been shown to help ease back pain and increase mobility due to its anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing properties. Studies in Germany suggest that Devil's Claw can be helpful in tackling arthritis of the knee and hip.
 
Devil's claw also has been used for skin conditions and conditions involving the gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidneys, bronchial asthma and Ulcerative Colitis.
It is used to stimulate appetite and improve digestion, as the bitter taste of devil's claw tea is thought to stimulate digestive juices. Also, to balance cholesterol and fatty acids in the blood.
Its main function includes anti-inflammation, pain and rheumatism, antioxidant, promoting assimilation, regulating immunity and improve the vitality of the joints.

 

Function

Harpagoside is isolated from Harpagophytum procumbens (Hp). Harpagoside has inhibitory effects on COX-1 and COX-2 activity and inhibits NO production[1].
